Throughout American history, as settlers moved westward from the East, many of the innovations and traditions that became hallmarks of the American frontier were first developed or refined here in the Delmarva region. Among them were log cabins, Conestoga wagons, the long rifle, itinerant preachers, also known as circuit riders, and DuPont gunpowder. The region also produced remarkable artists such as George Catlin, Frank Schoonover, and N.C. Wyeth, whose work helped shape and preserve the imagery, legends, and spirit of the American West.
